FNM October 5, 2012

Sometimes you have to make do with what you have. FNM on release/rotation day is generally this time. I'm trying to remember what I played a year ago--I think it was a terrible version of Kuldotha Red (way worse without Goblin Guide, Bushwhacker and Ornithopter). Two years ago it was random rares slotted into the Myr of Mirrodin intro pack.  Tonight was a big step up from either of those decks! Granted, it was "Three-Color Rare Binder," but it didn't do too poorly.

Creatures
3 Arbor Elf
4 Avacyn's Pilgrim
1 Geist-Honored Monk
2 Loxodon Smiter
2 Trostani, Selesnya's Voice

Sorceries
2 Call of the Conclave
4 Lingering Souls

Instants
4 Midnight Haunting
3 Selesnya Charm

Enchantments
4 Intangible Virtue
1 Parallel Lives

Planeswalkers
2 Ajani, Caller of the Pride
3 Garruk Relentless
2 Sorin, Lord of Innistrad

Lands
1 Gavony Township
2 Isolated Chapel
2 Overgrown Tomb
4 Sunpetal Grove
4 Temple Garden
1 Vault of the Archangel
2 Woodland Cemetery
3 Forest
3 Plains
2 Swamp

Sideboard
3 Centaur Healer
2 Dryad Militant
3 Oblivion Ring
3 Rootborn Defenses
2 Sigarda, Host of Herons
2 Sundering Growth

The deck did much better than I expected it to. The biggest surprise was Trostani, oddly. There were zombies in abundance, and she manages to block most of them while steadily gaining you significant amounts of life. She forts up extremely well with Sorin tokens. Sweet plays of the evening including activating Sorin's -6 to take a Geralf's Messenger, a Blood Artist and a Gravecrawler (the math was awkward--the Blood Artist triggered three times in favor of my opponent, but I got Trostani triggers when I got them on my side as well as the Messenger trigger), using Garruk, the Veil-Cursed's -1 and sacrificing a Spirit token to get a Geist-Honored Monk to go bigger than a different Zombies deck, and casting Sigarda on turn 3.

The deck has some definite weaknesses--I got murdered by BWR Reanimator because I have no hard graveyard hate. I think Dryad Militant probably needs to be Tormod's Crypt, Ground Seal or Rest in Peace. The deck was a lot of  fun, though, and I think I'm going to continue to tune it.

  1. How did the mana base feel? Were Vault of the Archangel and Gavony Township significant enough players that you would continue running them over colored sources?

I think if I had to pick a graveyard hate to try first, I'd probably try Rest in Peace. I like the cantrip effect on Ground Seal, but being able to shut down Reanimator and Geralf's Messenger with the same card seems like a big deal, unless you can afford the sideboard space to put them both in. Ground Seal seems a little better against a Reanimator deck specifically.

  2. Rest in Peace is awesome, but I switched out my Dryads for Purify the Grave. I like the idea of being able to hose and napcaster and Unburial Rites on the fly, making them waste cards. Realistically, if I use both copies completely I should be doing well, and not incidentally screwing over Lingering Souls, Garruk's third backside ability and Sorin's ultimate. I'll see how it goes.
